After the screws and tabs were unattached I was able to see the backside of the main board and the melted joint easily stood out.

This is a picture of my finished work. It is awful. But it works -- so far.
I probably should have watched this video on soldering techniques before attempting the repair instead of after.
My first attempt at soldering the joint didn't "take". So rather than give up...I cleaned it all off and tried again. It was obvious this was the spot to fix. Second attempt worked and is just as pretty as the photo provided here! So...if you aren't great at soldering, and it doesn't fix the issue right off the bat, try it again! Don't give up!

ReplyDeleteI'm curious if the heat that melted away the original solder is from the relay or current on the pcb trace. My system is 5yrs old and I hope this lasts at least 5 more.

ReplyDeleteLooks like my K1 is the problem, but I also noticed my E1 and E2 blew apart (bottom right corner). Fingers-crossed that re-soldering the K1 only will work.

ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this. Guess I'm a little dense, but I don't get what you have to do between the first picture and the second picture in step 6. Do you just melt some solder around the area and it fixes it? I've never soldered before, and the videos I watched all depict soldering being used to join two things together. What needs to be joined here?

ReplyDeleteI am having this same problem but when i removed my board there is no obvious signs of burning or missing solder, any suggestions? I wiggled things around a little, mainly the K-1 relay, and got it working but im sure this will only be temporary! Any ideas?
